Short answer: it is possible. The IIT Jodhpur B.S. programme lists competitive-exam aspirants and parallel-degree students among its intended learners. You need a passed Class 12 with 60% (50% for reserved categories), and the programme takes about 15 hours a week. For a JEE dropper, it means working towards an IIT Jodhpur credential in the same year as your attempt. For a future CAT aspirant, the B.S. is an undergraduate degree; after completing it, a graduate can apply for CAT subject to that cycle’s eligibility rules. What you need to understand before paying are the refund window and the Year 1 rules, both explained below.
Weighing a drop year
Students taking a JEE drop year need to balance exam preparation against the time and financial commitment of an additional degree. Some prefer to spend the year only on preparation; others want to be working towards a formal credential at the same time. The practical trade-off depends on the student’s goals, available time and budget.
What BS in Management & Technology asks of you
- Eligibility: you must have passed Class 12 with 60% aggregate (50% reserved). Students still in Class 12 can’t apply yet.
- Entrance: one online test, 60 MCQs in 120 minutes (Logical, Verbal and Numerical, 40 minutes each), with negative marking. It does not require JEE-level mathematics, but the programme still requires about 15 hours of academic engagement per week. The fee is Rs 999.
- Weekly load: about 15 hours across six courses. Each course has two recorded 50-minute classes, which you can watch when you choose, and one live 50-minute faculty session.
- Dates: the programme’s September 2026 entrance cycle was scheduled for 27 September 2026, with the next batch beginning on 1 January 2027. Check the official page for the current test window.
Fifteen hours is a real commitment. It is about two hours a day, and the recorded classes can be moved around, but only the live sessions are fixed. Map them against your coaching timetable before you commit.
Two learners on IIT Jodhpur’s programme page came to BS in Management & Technology after a NEET drop year. Naina Soni says: “I studied biology and took a NEET drop year, which left me uncertain about my career… Most importantly, it has given me direction.”
Path A vs Path B
| Path A: preparation only | Path B: preparation + BS in Management & Technology | |
| Time for the exam | The whole year | The year minus about 15 hrs/week |
| If the exam goes well | You join your target college | You join your target college, and may be able to continue BS in Management & Technology as a second degree if the workload allows, subject to UGC guidelines and both institutions’ rules |
| If it doesn’t | A year with no credential | You are already in an IIT Jodhpur degree; the Certificate comes after Year 1 and the Diploma after Year 2 |
| Cost | Coaching only | Coaching + Rs 1,40,000 a year |
The rules to know before you pay
These three rules are the ones JEE droppers need to know.
1. Refunds: 100% refund before classes begin, 50% within the first month, nothing after that. The Rs 999 test fee and Rs 5,000 seat booking are never refundable. Because the refund entitlement changes after classes begin, review the refund terms against your own exam calendar before enrolling.
2. No deferral in Year 1: a one-time deferral of up to a year is only available after the first year (with Programme Director approval and 50% of the academic fee payable).
3. The first credential comes after Year 1: the Certificate in Business Fundamentals needs 36 credits. If you leave after one semester to join a B.Tech, you leave with no credential, unless you continue BS in Management & Technology alongside your new degree.
Students considering this route should account for the Year 1 commitment, because the first academic credential is awarded after completing the required Year 1 credits.
For future CAT aspirants: BS in Management & Technology as the undergraduate degree for later CAT applications
CAT is a postgraduate management entrance test. After completing a bachelor’s degree, graduates can apply subject to the eligibility requirements of the relevant CAT cycle. For a student who has only finished Class 12, BS in Management & Technology is therefore not a CAT backup but an undergraduate degree. The 3-year B.S. exit is a bachelor’s degree. Its curriculum includes finance, marketing, operations, strategy, AI and analytics, which can also provide academic background relevant to students later pursuing management education.
If you already hold or are completing another bachelor’s degree, you don’t need BS in Management & Technology for CAT eligibility. Only take it if you want the management-and-technology education itself.
What the full degree gives you
- A B.S. awarded by IIT Jodhpur on completing 141 credits.
- A lifetime alumni card and IIT Jodhpur email ID on completing the four-year degree.
- Two optional on-campus immersion modules (about Rs 6,000 each) and an on-campus graduation ceremony.
- Eligibility to apply to IIT Jodhpur’s TISC incubator and take part in E-Cell activities.
- A described pathway to IIT Jodhpur’s Executive MBA Technology. That programme has its own test and currently needs 60% and two years of work experience.
Frequently asked questions
Will BS in Management & Technology hurt my JEE preparation?
It takes about 15 hours a week. Most of that is recorded classes you can watch when you like, plus one live session per course. Whether it hurts depends on your coaching timetable, so plan the live sessions first.
What if I clear JEE after starting BS in Management & Technology?
Nothing forces you to leave. You can continue BS in Management & Technology as a second degree alongside your B.Tech (subject to your new institute’s rules) or exit. Remember that the first credential, the Certificate, needs the full Year 1.
Can I apply while still in Class 12?
No. You must have passed Class 12 with 60% aggregate (50% for reserved categories) at the time of applying.
Is the entrance test as hard as JEE?
It isn’t designed like either. It is a 120-minute aptitude test of logical reasoning, verbal ability and basic numerical ability, with negative marking. It needs no advanced maths.
Can I defer BS in Management & Technology for a year to focus on my exam?
Not in the first year. A single deferral of up to one year is allowed after Year 1, with Programme Director approval and 50% of the academic fee payable.
Is BS in Management & Technology only for students who didn’t clear JEE?
No. IIT Jodhpur lists Class 12 graduates, working professionals, parallel-degree students and competitive-exam aspirants among its learners.
Does a BS in Management & Technology degree make me eligible for CAT?
Both the 3-year and 4-year B.S. are bachelor’s degrees. After completing the B.S., graduates can apply for CAT subject to the eligibility requirements of that CAT cycle. Individual IIMs can set further criteria.
